eeBoo’s Obstacles as seen by Education Week:Teachers

Posted by design on Sep 11, 2013 in Press Articles, Product Feature

We actually stumbled across this review–which always makes a review like this extra special! Tamara Fisher, a writer for the blog and a gifted education specialist, found Obstacles at her local toy store. It is worth reading the review in the whole, but her general point is creativity is declining, “Of possible concern regarding creativity is apparent evidence based on research that children’s creativity .. has been declining in recent decades” but games such as Obstacles can counter act this decline and  ”be a fun way to encourage kids to think innovatively about how to solve problems and overcome barriers.”  Visit the blog to read the whole review: Obstacles as a Path to Creativity.

I love that Tamara touches on the flexibility of Obstacles’ rules. Her and her fellow players also came up with some stunning solutions! “Our solution to the Ice Obstacle involved placing the cushion on the shower curtain, using the stick of butter to grease up the shower curtain’s surface area on the ice, and pulling the cord from around the cushion to attach from the shower curtain to the giant bird who would fly and pull us across the ice as we used the feather duster for a stabilizing rudde.r”

Thanks Tamara for the great review!

Felt Mosaics Earns Video & Review in Time to Play!

Posted by design on Apr 5, 2012 in Press Articles, Product Feature

Felt Mosaics has earned an excellent review from Time to Play Magazine, adding to the growing voice of public approbation. Time to Play gave Felt Mosaics an average of 4 out of 5 stars, along with an informative, thoughtful review and an accompanying video.

The editors pointed out that the activity, which they felt was best described as a puzzle toy, brings different things to kids of different ages: “The brightly colored triangles and tactile aspect of Felt Mosaic will keep younger children engaged, but older kids will probably have more fun trying to puzzle out how to recreate the designs and images on the cards, especially the harder cards…kids can also engage in open-ended play with the triangle pieces, placing them however they want on the board and creating all sorts of different designs and creations.”

Toys are Tools: eeBoo Art Books Encourage Success!

Posted by design on Apr 4, 2012 in Press Articles, Product Feature, Uncategorized

After visiting us at Toy Fair, Toys are Tools, a site for thoughtful toy reviews with an emphasis on education,  selected our Art Books for one of their in-depth reviews. Every Toys are Tools interview includes the feedback of an expert in the field, as well as that of the chief editor. After trying out our middle-difficulty Learn-to-Draw book by Melissa Sweet, the reviewers had some very nice things to say!

The review delves into many of the uniquely advantageous aspects of the book, with a special emphasis on its ability to inform without intimidating children, even sparking them to practice on their own. As the editor says, “I think this “workbook” is probably the first workbook I saw where kids finish the page and then grab blank sheets of paper to keep the lesson alive.”

Although Toys that Teach focuses on the Drawing Book by Melissa Sweet, they also mention Lizzy Rockwell’s Simple Forms and Kevin Hawk’s Drawing Animals as having great instructional and inspirational potential!
